About

12 July - 04 August 2019

Artist Village is a new sculptural exhibition launching at Metal’s Village Green Festival in Chalkwell Park. Experimenting with alternative formats for displaying and experiencing contemporary art, the project asks the artists to step away from the traditional white cube setting and create artwork for a more challenging and less hierarchical context of an outdoor public park and community festival.

The participating artists are Chloe Brooks, Ali Eisa, Brian Griffiths and Milly Peck. After spending 1 week in residence at Metal’s Chalkwell Hall familiarising themselves with the culture and histories of Southend each artist is now developing individual sculptural responses to the town and the park based on their own artistic interests.

Village Green is a large multi-art form and music festival produced by Metal. Taking place on 13th July 2019 this will be the first phase of the project and a chance to see the finished artworks amongst the excitement of a busy and diverse festival environment.

After Village Green the artworks will then remain in the park until 4th August allowing visitors to experience the artworks at their leisure in a calmer and more relaxed environment.

Artist Village has been organised by Jon Kipps, an artist/curator from Southend. The Project has been made possible through kind support from Arts Council England and Metal.

This website is the online base for Artist Village. Lots more content will be added as the project grows so please check back over the coming weeks to keep up to date!
